Siobhan watches: Supernatural: Season One, Episode 6. "Skin."

Hey, I'm back after my bug! Inspiration is not coming easily for Departed, but I think I know where I'm going with it now, so I deserve a break from it to come and write this! Sorry for the lack of screen caps in this one, I keep getting shadows in my attempts and there aren't many pictures out there that I can find for this episode.

The show starts in St Louis, Missouri, where a girl is tied to a chair, and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is playing. We see someone holding a knife, examining it, as outside there is a SWAT team moving in towards the house. The team shoots the lock, and the man who has tied the girl up turns to look at the noise. The man looks a little like Dean from the angle we see.

He tightens her mouth gag as the team enter the house. We see bloody hand prints along the walls, and the girl herself is blood-soaked. The team find the girl, and radio across to others in the house that they've found her. As they untie her, she tells them that her captor is in the next room.

They go through to the next room, where the man is trying to escape out of the sliding balcony doors. They yell at him to freeze, don't move, drop his knife. He turns around, still holding the knife. We can clearly see that it is Dean.

I know that we're now six episodes in, but still. Welcome to Supernatural. Things are about to get messy.

We cut to a week earlier, where the boys are pulling up into a gas station. Dean is telling Sam his plans for the rest of the day, where they can stop for lunch and how they're aiming for Bisbee by the end of the night. Sam doesn't react.

Dean - "Sam wears women's underwear."
Sam - "I've been listening. I'm just busy."
Dean - "Busy doing what?"

Sam has been flicking through his phone, reading emails from his friends in Stanford.

Sam doesn't exactly deny the accusation that he wears panties, does he? In my headcanon, this is an admission by omission. Sam wears ladies underwear.

Dean laughs that Sam stays in touch with his old college friends. Sam asks why he wouldn't and Dean asks back what Sam has to tell them. Sam explains the basics - that as far as his friends know, this is a road trip and he needed some time off after Jess. Dean says "Oh, so you lie to them?" and Sam says no, he just doesn't tell them absolutely everything. Dean says, yeah, that's lying, and he gets it because the truth can be worse. Sam asks what he's meant to do, cut everyone out? Dean shrugs, his way of saying yes.

The real difference here is that Dean actually doesn't have that many friends, or is only friends with other hunters. But Sam has always been fairly sociable and has a lot of friends. It's a point of contention between them a lot. Sometimes, Dean can be a little overbearing on it, like he seems to want Sam to be as singular about people as he is. I think this is where Wincest sort of originates from, Dean's need to have Sam to himself. There is rationalisation throughout the show, but you can see in these sorts of scenes how that can be misconstrued.

Sam stumbles across an email from his friend Rebecca that makes him sit up. When he comments on it, Dean asks if she's hot. Sam ignores him to read out the email, explaining that Rebecca's brother, Zach, has been charged with murder. His girlfriend was killed. Sam says Rebecca knows Zach didn't kill her, but the cops seem to have a pretty tight case against him. Dean says "Dude, what kinda people you hanging out with?" and Sam assures Dean that Zach is no killer. Dean says maybe Sam knows Zach as well as Zach knows Sam.

I think Dean's a little jealous that sam wuvs someone else! I forgot that in the earlier episodes, he's down on Sam a lot. Mostly it's because he raised Sam and has high expectations and a protective edge, but some of it is down to how John treated them. Monkey see, monkey do.

Sam demands to ignore Bisbee and go to St Louis. Dean tells him it doesn't sound like their kind of problem. Sam says it is, because they're his friends. Dean points out that St Louis is 400 miles in the other direction. Sam wins the fight, and Dean drives the Impala, wheels screeching, off the garage forecourt.

They get to the house and Rebecca opens the door, smiling at Sam and acting embarrassed when he calls her 'little Becky'.

Aaaaaaaand we can add Becky to the recycled names list! If only this was Becky Rosen …

Becky tells Sam he knows what he can do with all his 'little Becky' crap, before pulling him into a hug. They chat for a minute about her email, and then Dean interrupts to introduce himself to Becky. She invites them in and they exchange more pleasantries about the house. Becky said she was only staying there - at her parents house - for a weekend, but now she's taking the semester off, or until Zach's free. Their parents are in Paris, so it's just Becky there for Zach. She offers them a beer, and Dean immediately goes for it, while Sam says no for both of them.

He looks at Dean then, it's like he's on to his brother at that point. Come on Sam, he'd been angling for in Becky's pants since you mentioned her name!

Sam asks Becky what happened. Becky says that Zach came home to find his girlfriend, Emily, tied to a chair. She was beaten and bloodied and had stopped breathing. He called 911 and the police showed up to arrest him. But the only way he could have done it would be if he was in two places at once. The police's evidence is a CCTV video showing Zach coming home earlier, but he had been visiting Becky at their parents house until at least midnight.

Every clue you need about this episode is in the above paragraph. It's the earliest they've risked revealing the monster so far. You'll see what I mean. But please do remember the first scene, and the description of that scene.

Sam asks to see the crime scene. Becky asks what he could do, and Sam says not much, but Dean's a cop, so he could do something. Dean laughs and says, actually, he's a detective, from Bisbee Arizona.

Nice little dig there, Dean.

Becky says she's not sure, and Sam says he just wants to help prove that Zach is innocent. She walks away to get the keys to the house and Dean says Sam's lying pretty badly to her. Sam says he's just trying to help and Dean tells him he doesn't think it's their type of problem.

Ahem, of course it is, or there wouldn't be an episode about it.

Sam points out that Zach was in two places at once, and they've looked into less. The scene cuts to them pulling up to Zach's apartment, where they enter. The room is covered in blood, and there are evidence tags everywhere. Sam asks Becky what the police said, as Dean examines part of the room that has caught his eye. Emily let her attacker in, there was no forced entry.

Becky says that a week before, someone broke into Zachs apartment and stole some of his clothes. Outside, a dog starts barking like crazy, and all three go to look. It seems to be barking at them. Becky tells them that the dog was sweet natured, but it had been like that since the murder. Dean and Sam discuss, out of Becky's earshot, the idea that animals can be more sensitive to the paranormal than humans. Sam asks Dean if he thinks it is their kind of problem, and Dean tries to dismiss it, but says they need to look at the tapes first.

Becky has a copy of the security tape, she stole it from the lawyer, because she wanted to see it for herself.

The scene cuts to a man who looks like the photos of Zach around the apartment. He's watching a couple as they leave a building and approach a car, talking about how he's going away for a couple of days. Zach is writing in a book, but keeping an eye on the couple. As the man drives away, Zach's focus is on the woman as she heads back inside. He smiles, and his eyes flicker, almost glowing at the pupils.

Yeah, this isn't really Zach, if you haven't already guessed. So was it really Dean in the first scene?

The boys are watching the CCTV with Becky, discussing the authenticity of the tapes. Sam abruptly asks for the beers Becky offered earlier, and she agrees, leaving the room to grab the beers out of the fridge. Sam asks for sandwiches as well before she heads out completely. She laughs, asking him if he thought it was Hooters or something. Once she's left, Dean mutters "I wish" and then asks Sam what he's noticed on the tapes that he doesn't want to discuss in front of Becky. Sam rewinds, and then plays the tapes in slow motion, stopping on a shot of Zach's face, where his eyes are reflecting the light. Dean says maybe it's a camera flare. Sam says he's never seen a camera flare like that.

Sam speculates that the eyes are the windows to the soul and maybe the dog got a feel for this version of Zach and knew it wasn't the real him. That maybe this was a Zach double. Dean asks if he just means a doppelgänger, and Sam says yes, which would explain why this eidence and his alibi are both pretty airtight.

I think one of the reasons why this is coming out so early on in the episode is because for this story, it's the repercussions that matter more than the monster. There's a pretty tough fall out from this episode, which works as a better justification than the likes of Twilight or 50 shades as to why the police are rarely involved in threatening situations.

The man from the couple shown earlier walks into his house, calling for his partner. He's talking of his bust business deal, and the fact that he called and she didn't answer. He misses the blood smears on the walls. He looks around, calling for her, worried by how quiet it is. He turns, and then sees a bloody handprint on the wall. He runs through the apartment and finds her, tied up and bloody on a chair. She panics as he takes the gag out of her mouth, and pleads with him not to hurt her any more. A glass smashes in the other room, and he goes to investigate, coming face to face with his mirror image. The shining eyes slide into view for a moment, and slither back, before the doppelgänger strikes him and he passes out.

Sam and Dean pull up outside the apartment, and Dean tries to clarify what they're doing in the neighbourhood at 5.30 in the morning. Sam says the tape shows the killer going in, but not coming out. They've worked out the doppelgänger would have left by the back door, and the police would never follow it because they believe they have the suspect. Sam finds some blood on a telegraph pole, and Dean says he can't see any more blood nearby. An ambulance drives passed at that moment.

They follow the ambulance and ask a bystander what happened. She tells Dean that the man tried to kill his wife. The bystander says he seemed like a nice guy, it didn't make sense that he would tie her up and hurt her. Sam and Dean swap a quick look, before we see the man put into a police car. Sam investigates around the back of the building as Dean talks to some more bystanders. Dean eventually approaches Sam.

Dean - "Hey, remember when I said this wasn't our kind of problem?"
Sam - "Yeah."
Dean - "Definitely our kind of problem."
Sam - "What'd you find out?"
Dean - "I just talked to the patrolman who was first on the scene. He heard this guy Alex's story? Apparently the dude was driving home from a business trip when his wife was attacked."
Sam - "So he was in two places at once?"
Dean - "Exactly. And then he sees himself in the house, police say he's a nut job.
Sam - "Two dark doubles, attacking loved ones in exactly the same way."
Dean - "Could be the same thing doing it too."
Sam - "Shapeshifter? Something that could make itself look like anyone?"
Dean - "Every culture in the world has a shapeshifter lore."

Do they? I mean, I can only speak for myself … I guess in Essex, we're expected to shape-shift into Amy Childs or some crap. Otherwise, this is news to me. But we're 15.22 in a 40.09 episode, and we're already hearing what the monster is, and how it's impacting the town. I like the differing approach to each monster. It's almost like the longer it is to figure out what it is, the easier it is to off once they get there. Stripping away the possibilities strips away the impossibility of defence.

They decide it must be an actual shape shifter, not a werewolf, and then Sam asks if Shapeshifters fly in any of the lore Dean's heard of. Dean says no, and Sam says he's found a trail, like he did at Becky's, but the trail suddenly ends. Dean says there's another way it could have gone. Down, not up. They both look down, and see a manhole cover.

They go down, and begin looking around the sewers under the town. They agree it must be the way that the Shapeshifter is moving around town, and then they find a shed skin on the floor, bloody and sinewy. Dean uses a blade to pick up a necklace as Sam wonders if the mess is from his victims. Dean says he's had a sick thought, maybe once the Shapeshifter takes a new shape, it sheds the old one. They're currently looking at the remains of Fake Zach.

Back at the Impala, Dean tells Sam some of the advice John imparted on Shapeshifters. No matter what kind they are, there is one surefire way to kill them. Silver bullet to the heart. Sam's phone rings and he picks up to Becky. She asks where he is and he tells her, near Zach's place. Becky says she no longer needs his help, so he can stop. She mentioned to the lawyer going to the crime scene and they'd investigated and said Detective Dean Winchester does not exist.

Motherfu … he told me he was a detective too! Or was it a city boy? I don't know, he smiled and I gave him my lady parts, let's put it that way ;)

Becky chews Sam out for lying to her over something like that. Sam says he's trying to help. She tells him the move could have ruined Zach's case. She hangs up on him, and he pouts as Dean approaches, and says he hates to say it, but he told Sam so. He repeats the point that it's easier not to lie to the people they care about, they just need to distance themselves. They're not exactly like other people, after all. He then tells Sam that at least the job isn't without its perks, and hands Sam a gun.

Only in Supernatural could that sort of action be considered a perk for the heroes of the piece. Most would say it was the villain, or the anti-hero, who got the perks. Not if you're a Winchester. This is one of the interesting aspects of Supernatural, because good and bad are turned on their head. It's good to be able to shoot a gun, because you can kill evil beings. It's a perk to kill, if that death is of some creature that shouldn't exist. It is NOT okay if the death is an innocent person. Good and bad depend entirely upon circumstance.

Sam takes the gun and tucks it into his waistband.

You're welcome.

They head back into the sewer, searching for signs of the Shapeshifter.

Dean - "I think we're close to it's lair."
Sam - "Why do you say that?"
Dean - "Because there's another puke-inducing pile next to your face?"

Sam double takes, and sees the lump of flesh stuck to the pipe near his head. They see a rotten body on the floor nearby and try to work out how long it's been there, and how many murders it's gotten away with. Sam pans the flashlight around to look at Dean again, and starts. The Shapeshifter is right behind Dean, it's eyes reflective in the light beam. Sam screams Dean's name, as the shapeshifter punches Dean and runs off. Sam aims the gun at it, but can't get a clear shot. Dean tells Sam to chase it, or more accurately, "Get the son-of-a-bitch!"Dean tries to follow as well, gripping his shoulder which he hurt in the blow from the Shapeshifter.

The Shapeshifter leaves through a manhole, and runs across a park towards a street. When the boys get out of the manhole, he's lost from view. Sam quickly tucks the gun away. They agree to split up, and to mer the other side of the block the Shapeshifter most likely went. They both run into small crowds of people, Sam in a high street and Dean in the backstreets; and they look over each face as carefully and discreetly as they can.

Eventually, they meet up, Dean asking if Sam saw anything, and Sam saying no, he's gone. They decide to go back to the car, and as Sam walks off, Dean hangs back. A car drives by, and we see Dean's eyes shining.

Dean gets bitchslapped so easily in the series. So he's the latest Shapeshifter victim. And the first scene may now start to make sense. Oh, but Dean hasn't got a girlfriend (that he knows about ;) ) so who is the girl from the first scene? Well, he did wish Becky worked at Hooters …

Sam asks if it found another way underground, and ShifterDean says probably, then asks for the keys. Sam shifts them in his pocket, and then mentions their dad running into a Shifter in San Antonio.

Fun fact! Jared Padalecki grew up in San Antonio. I bet he'd never admit it, but deep down he squeed over the hometown shout-out.

ShifterDean says no, Austin. And it wasn't a shifter, it was a Thoughtform. A psychic projection. Sam says, okay, right, and hands him the keys.

This is the nicest way I've seen them test each other. Later on, it becomes routine to douse each other in water, bleach and then stab each other's forearms with a silver blade. They're being cute.

ShifterDean looks into the trunk, studying the weaponry, as Sam heads to the car. Sam jumps out of nowhere after ShifterDean's had a good look, pointing the gun at it and demanding to know what's happened to Dean. ShifterDean says chill out, it's him, and Sam says like hell it is, where's Dean? ShifterDean says here, about to get shot. Sam says he caught the keys with his left hand, and wasn't his shoulder hurt? ShifterDean says yeah, it got better. Sam repeats it's not his brother, and ShifterDean baits him, asking why he's not pulling the trigger. It's because Sam's not sure. And then ShifterDean kicks Sam's ass too.

Do all kids of ex-military men go through such rigorous training they make Jason Bourne look like an amateur? Or is it just a Hunter thing? And before you say it, Shifter's are strong, you think Bourne would take one on and not get his ass kicked? It's not like a later episode where Dean gets beaten by a little girl. Okay, Lilith, but still …

Sam comes too, tied up in the sewer lair. He looks around, struggling to breath, and then sees ShifterDean, walking through the lair with a bundle of ropes. ShifterDean looks at him, walks over, and then smacks him across the face.

They're best friends, and adorable with it, but I'm pretty sure Jensen loved smacking the hell out of Jared.

Sam demands to know where Dean is. The Shifter tells Sam not to worry about Dean, he should worry about himself. That Sam wouldn't want to know where Dean is. ShifterDean then starts monologuing about himself, how he's now got access to Dean's memories and the more he learns about the Winchesters, the less he believes he had a bad background. The Shifter then starts trying to mess with Sam's head, rewriting Dean's thoughts, describing Dean's resentment that Sam got out, and went to college, while Dean had to stay with John and put his dreams on hold.

I don't think Dean has ever expressed that. Yes, he regrets not living life the way he might have chosen to, and yes he's resentful of the Hunting life sometimes, but he deals with it because he knows he's doing the right thing and protecting people and the good outweighs the bad. Dean has too much empathy to be so fucking selfish. The Shifter's a dick.

The Shifter carries on twisting Dean's thoughts, saying Dean's jealous of Sam's friendships, and he hates the way everyone leaves him. Even their dad left him. And that at least this wasn't without it's perks. Like, Dean would go for Becky if he had the chance. And then he covers Sam with a sheet.

At Becky's house, someone is knocking on the door. She goes to see who it is, and finds ShifterDean. He starts talking before she can tell him where to go, making it sound like he'd gone against Sam's request to justify their actions to her, if she was willing to listen.

Even with a shifter posing, it's hard to say no to that widdle face!

Meanwhile, back in the sewer, Sam is trying to slip the ropes binding him, and cussing when it's not working right away.

I guess ShifterDean raided Dean's thoughts in order to learn that they could slip knots, and which knots they would struggle with. And scarily, I would not have been surprised it John had tied both boys to chairs throughout their childhoods just for them to learn how to do so.

Sam hears someone else coughing, and turns to look at another sheet in the corner, which says "That better be you Sam, and not that freak of nature!" Sam laughs in relief and fills Sam in on what the Shifter is doing. Dean says "Well, he's not stupid. He picked the handsome one."

**recap terminated for inappropriate fangirl moment!!!!**
**resume transmission**

At Rebecca's house, she's sat in front of a fire with ShifterDean, recapping that there is a being impersonating her brother out there. ShifterDean rationalises the concept the way Dean would, saying he knows it's nuts, but how else could Zach be in two places at once? Rebecca asks if it's some kind of genetic freak, and ShifterDean starts talking about evolution as mutation. That maybe it was once human, but different, and hated for that. Until it tried to become someone else.

That's right, folks! The lore is coming at us from the monster itself! Can't always be Sam ;)

In the sewer lair, Sam continues telling Dean about the shifter, and how it wasn't just borrowing Dean's looks, but his thoughts, memories and feelings too. When Sam describes it, Dean says "You mean, like a Vulcan Mind Meld?"

And people call Sam a dork. Sam's a nerd, sure, but Dean's a closet geek.

Sam says maybe it's why the shifter hasn't just killed them, it needs the thoughts to behave appropriately. They loosen their bonds enough to free themselves, and bust out of the lair, Sam saying they need to find a phone and call the police. Dean says wait, that means putting a call out on him. They start running towards Rebecca's parent's house.

At her house, ShifterDean is saying he understand the monster.

Or is ShifterDean describing Dean? Or is that what Dean thought about the Shifter? You are welcome for that mindfuck.

As the Shifter talks, it starts trying to stroke Rebecca's cheek, and she tells him he should leave. He leans over and whispers in her ear, and she freaks out, calling him disgusting and demanding that he leave. He yells back, and she says she's calling the police. He follows her and pulls the phone out of the wall. She screams, and trips as she tries to run away, and he sits on her, pinning her down.

I want to take a moment to say that Jensen is a really good actor, because he's really fucking terrifying and dominating in this scene. No wonder she crapped her pants. I prefer my jokey Jensen. Although, if Dean pinned me down and straddled me like that …

He ties her up, until she's trussed in a chair, like the other girls were. He's telling her she's a nice girl, and it makes what he's about to do harder. And then we see the blade, like in the opening sequence.

Yep, this is the scene we saw first. ShifterDean is still fucking monologuing through it. Like, jeez dude, love the sound of your own voice much?

A gun shot goes off - the one to open the front door - and a dog barks. He covers her mouth with his hand and shushes her, then moves through the house. We see ShifterDean trying to avoid the SWAT teams from earlier. He gets caught at the sliding doors, and when the SWAT member orders him to drop the knife, he throws it in the member's face. The back up guy starts shooting at ShifterDean, and all the bullets fall off him. He kicks both SWAT team members, before rushing out of the door, jumping off the balcony that he was on and clearing a few stories, outrunning the gunfire that followed him.

ShifterDean limps into the sewer lair, and pulls off the clothes it was using, and then sheds Dean's skin.

The scene cuts to a news report, which includes a photo-fit of Dean's face, and his real name attached to it.

My baby is now a fugitive. It kinda sucks that all they do is try to protect people and they can catch no breaks. They now need to fly under the radar all the time. There is now the threat of police as well as demons and ghosts and vampires and whatever else. It does lend for some interesting ways around legal issues when Dean's seen as a mass-murderer.

Sam and Dean are watching the report in the window of a TV store, and Dean complains that it's not even a good picture. Sam says it's good enough, looking around them edgily. Sam says as they walk away that at least it said attempted murder, and Dean shouts him down. Sam says he'll check on Becky in the morning. Dean says "All right, but first I'm going to find that handsome devil and kick the holy crap out of him." Sam says they have no silver bullets, no way of finding him, and Dean says it's too personal not to beat him up.

They talk about going in the sewers, but it's pointless without weapons. Sam wonders if ShifterDean drove the car over, because he left on foot. Dean says maybe, and then complains about it driving his car. Sam tells him to let it go. They jog along to Rebecca's house, and spot the Impala. Before they can approach it, however, a police car appears, and they stop walking. They start to double back, and there's a police car at the end of the road they just came down. They're cornered. Dean spots a way over a fence, and Sam tells him to go, he'll hold the police off because he, at least, isn't Wanted.

Sam reminds Dean to stay out of the sewers, and Dean disappears as the police leave the cars and approach Sam, telling him to keep his hands above his head.

The next day, Dean is at the back of the Impala, loading up another gun and muttering to himself. "I'm sorry, Sam. You know me. I just can't wait." He heads back into the sewers, avoiding the recent piles of flesh left on the floor, until he hits the lair again, and finds an alter covered with small trinkets, trophies from its victims. He uncovers a lump hidden by a sheet, and finds Rebecca, bound and gagged and scared.

The scene cuts to Sam in Rebecca's house, where she's talking about the idea of Shapeshifters.

HarIseewhatyoudidthar, Shapeshifter! You're such an egomaniac! Do you think werewolves bang on about werewolves this much?

She asks how it's supposed to be killed, and Sam admits, a silver bullet to the heart. She calls him crazy, and then hits him over the head with a beer bottle.

And that is why Dean doesn't trust many people, or have as many friends.

In the sewer, Dean asks what happened and Rebecca talks quickly about her experience, as Dean works on untying her. Dean asks if she can walk, and she nods. Dean says they have to hurry, because Sam went to see her.

At Rebecca's house, there are flesh deposits everywhere, and Sam is once again being tied up, this time by ShifterDean. Sam asks what the Shifter's going to do to him, and the shifter says nothing, it's what Dean will do. Sam says Dean won't get caught, and the shifter says if he's killed his own brother, he'll be on the run for the rest of his life.

The Shifter starts monologuing again, about how it will miss Dean's skin, that Dean has a lot of good qualities and Sam needs to appreciate him more. It pulls a knife out of a bag and sticks it into a table near Sam, smirking as Sam reacts. Sam kicks the Shifter while it's caught off guard and reaches up to use the knife to cut his wrist bonds. He pulls the knife out of the table as the Shifter comes near and Sam starts trying to cut the shifter with the knife. ShifterDean grabs his arm and forces him to flip around, but Sam jumps right back up. ShifterDean calls him a son-of-a-bitch and carries on struggling to fight Sam.

Oh, ShifterDean, you think you're so smart, stealing RealDean's favourite term of endearment.

ShifterDean calls Sam little brother and Sam shouts back that it's not really Dean.

They're so possessive of each other! Seriously, Freud would have a field day with the Winchesters.

The fighting goes on for a while, the Shifter continually referring to their childhood as they do. Eventually, ShifterDean pins Sam down and tries to strangle him, and RealDean shows up, gun in hand, in the door. ShifterDean gets up, off of Sam, and RealDean shoots ShifterDean twice. ShifterDean slumps down, as Rebecca appears in the doorway behind Dean. RealDean stares at DeadDean, while Rebecca runs to check that Sam's okay. Dean reaches over, and steals his amulet back from the Shifter, as Sam watches.

The scene cuts to Dean leaning over a map on the Impala, distracted when a door opens, and Sam and Rebecca leave her parents house. She's asking him about what they really do, saying she doesn't believe it. Sam confirms that she's the only friend of his who knows the truth about what he does.

Oh, poor, sweet, naive Sam. Wait until you talk to Lucifer, or Brady. Life is going to fuck you right up.

Rebecca says the job must be lonely, and Sam says it's not so bad, he's with his family. She tells him everyone misses him, and asks him to call, then waves goodbye to Dean and goes back inside. Sam goes back to Dean, who asks what's going to happen with Zach? Sam tells him that the cops are blaming some guy called Dean Winchester, Zach's clothes with Emily's blood were found in his lair and maybe the tapes were tampered with? Zach will be released soon, anyway. He smirks, and Dean rolls his eyes, and they both climb into the car. Dean apologises to Sam that things can't be different and Sam can't be regular. Sam says it's okay, because even in college he never felt like he fit in. Dean tells him it's because he's a freak. And Dean's a freak too.

And then Dean says he's sorry that he's going to miss the chance to see his own funeral, and they both smile at his weirdness.
